How to care for opal
Opals are fascinating gemstones that enchant with their unique range of colors and characteristic "fire." However, to ensure that the beauty of your opal jewelry is preserved over time, there are a few mistakes that must be avoided. Contact with high temperature fluctuations or chemicals such as hairspray can cause the opal to lose its shine or crack over time. This guide will show you how to properly care for your opal, store the opal correctly, and protect the stone from damage . With the right handling, you can ensure that your opal always shines in all its glory and gives you a lifetime of joy.
cleaning opal
Required materials:
- Mild soap
- Soft brush (e.g. a toothbrush with soft bristles)
- Warm water
- Soft microfiber cloth
- Mild detergent (optional)
- Jewelry box or soft bag for storage
Step 1: Preparation
Make sure you have all the materials you need close at hand. Work over a soft surface to protect the opal from possible damage.
Step 2: Remove dirt
Rinse the opal carefully under warm water to remove any coarse dirt. Avoid using aggressive cleaning agents or chemical solutions to avoid damaging the stone.
Step 3: Soaking
If the opal is still dirty, fill a small bowl with warm water and add a mild soap. Let the opal soak for 10-15 minutes to loosen stubborn dirt.
Note for Welo Opals: This type of opal can absorb water, which may cause cracking or clouding, so you should avoid direct immersion in water. Instead, you can gently rinse and brush the stone under running water.
Step 4: Brushing
Use a soft toothbrush or a special jewelry brush to gently brush the opal, applying only light pressure to prevent scratches. Pay particular attention to the corners and edges where dirt can accumulate.
Step 5: Rinse
Rinse the opal thoroughly under warm water to completely remove soap residue. Be careful not to leave any soap residue behind to avoid discoloration.
Step 6: Drying
Gently dry the opal with a soft microfiber cloth. Dab gently rather than rubbing to avoid scratching. Allow the opal to dry completely before wearing it again or storing it in a jewelry box.
Important: Ultrasonic cleaning, which is often used for jewelry, is not always suitable for opals. Since opals have different properties - some are treated or stabilized, others are more sensitive - please feel free to contact us if you are unsure or have any questions.
protection and storage
Avoiding chemicals
Opals are sensitive to chemicals such as hairspray or perfume. Do not wear your opal jewelry until you have applied these products and avoid contact with aggressive cleaning products. These substances can damage the surface of the opal and affect its shine.
Proper storage
Store your opal in a cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature changes. Usually the humidity of the room is enough to keep the opal moist. However, if the opal has been exposed to intense sunlight or is kept in a very dry environment, you can place it in a bowl of water 1-2 times a week (except for Welo opals, which are sensitive to water). If you have purchased your opal product from FAERELLI, it is best to store it in the soft gift box provided or in a soft pouch to protect it from scratches and damage.
When should a specialist be called in?
If the opal is damaged to a greater extent, has deep scratches or cracks, you should definitely seek professional help. If the opal is loose in the setting or shows signs of drying out, it is also advisable to seek professional help. A jeweler with knowledge of opals can often safely repair the stone and return it to its original condition.
